The Tannoy Kensington SE features a 10-inch Dual Concentric driver with an AlNiCo magnet system and the Tannoy PepperPost WaveGuide, mounted in a 1100 mm tall, 406 mm wide solidly braced cabinet constructed of lacquered mahogany veneer with solid walnut edging and trim detail.
A speaker with a coaxial tweeter in front of the wooferCoaxial speakers in automobiles are 2- or 3-way loudspeakers in which the, or the tweeter and a mid-range driver, are mounted in front of the, partially obscuring it. The advantage of this design is the ability to use a smaller area, hence their popularity in car audio. The low frequency sound waves from the woofer are not reduced too much by the drivers in their path.
Without time-alignment correction, the sound from the tweeter may arrive slightly before the sound from the woofer; this misalignment is not generally addressed in automobile sound systems. This design was popularized in the 1970s with Electronic Industries, Inc. Of introducing the general concept in May 1973, and introducing a retail model the next month. This was followed by designs from Sparkomatic, and others.Professional audio. Eiche, Jon F. Been thinking for a while about building some DIY speakers using Tannoy Dual Concentric Drivers but have no idea where to source them. Anyone have any idea where I can get my hands on them.Would definately prefer new over second hand but I wouldnt rule it out./bYou could try contacting the distributors.
I couldn't find the drivers advertised on their site, but I have found that Syntec are one of the few distibutors who will reply quickly to an enquiry. As far as I know the drivers currently come in a home and a professional version in sizes 10', 12' and 15'. I suspect they prefer to sell the finished article including cabinets and crossovers, so may not encourage people building their own. The Gold, SIlver and Red monitors were superceded by the HPM dual concentric in the 80's, so the old Tannoys can be 30 to 50 years old.not that there is anything wrong with that.:biggrin:cheers2sheds. Are you chasing plans to build some DIY cabinets for your tannoy drivers?
Or are are you looking for Tannoy drivers, new preferably.I'm not real up to date on the latest Tannoy drivers, but I use 15' HPD 385 Dual Concentric drivers ( circa 80's ) in folded horn cabinets, and love them. And if in fact you are looking for cabinet suggestions for the Tannoy drivers, there is a sh.tload of info online for recommended cabinets for some of the vintage tannoy's.Chris. The dual concentrics are a beautiful speaker and I spent a lot of time around these from the early 70's on. My wife's Dad is still using the 12' Golds he bought in the late 60's in huge rear slot vented Wharfdale enclosures. I think you're going to struggle to get hold of these cheaply and when you look at the cost of them today, you may be better off to look at some modern alternatives. I know you're in WA but you could give the boys at Speaker Bits in Melbourne a call.I haven't been in there for a while now but they always had a heap of Tannoy DC drivers about.Cheers,Keith. Cheers for that guys I will have to look into it.I have only ever listened to the larger drivers from the higher end ranges before but what do you guys think of the smaller DC's.

I want to keep them a simple 2 way design - I dont want to use any additional drivers. So do you think that something like a 6' or 8' DC will suffice or should I just go straight to the larger drivers./bI had a 15' Monitor Gold in a massive Baird Cinema Cabinet with a 2' thick cement front baffle!
It was stuffed, but I rebuilt it and uesd it for a few years as my shed radio running off an old Sansui Valve tuner. That thing sounded great. This prompted me to find a pair of these. I found a pair of HPD 385a 15' jobbies.
Only had them for a year or so & they were in crappy cabs, had to sell them before I really had a chance to play with them. I regret selling them.See if you can find a pair of HPD 385's. They were made in the 70's and still have the Alnico magnets. They are cheaper than Golds and Reds & you will not lose money if you can get a pair under 2k and hang onto them for a few years. They have a rubber surround which does perish, but supposedly had better low end response than the earlier Gold's with paper surround. Parts are readily available, or at least they were.
I sold mine a few years ago with crossovers for 1500 the pair. They still come up in the trading post & eBay occasionally.I currently have a pair Tannoy D700 Definition's which I think are a great thing for 12 year old speakers. Different sound to the older paper cones though. I'll never forget the sound of that old cinema cabinet in mono. I still have the concrete baffle if anybody wants itThere was site called Hibernik Radio, or something similar, which had a lot of info on Tannoy. Sorry I don't have a link. Speakerbits in Melb used to have Tannoy stuff a few years ago too.CheersLos.

I have come across heaps of info online for recommended cabinets but couldnt find anyone selling the drivers by themselves. I take it you would recommend the larger Dual Concentrics over the smaller ones?
